I woke up at 5 AM for 50 Days, and This is What I learned

Okay guys, this article is coming from the heart.

March 2018, I’ve just finished a two-hour meeting. I went to the toilets to wash my face and I looked at myself at the mirror myself: What are you doing with your life?

So, I followed an old advice that says: If you don’t feel challenged, challenge yourself.

And that’s exactly what I did…

I went on a war against myself. I always had a problem sticking to a plan or executing a routine in a long period of time.

So, I challenged myself for 50 Days I will:

  1. Do meditation every morning
  2. Go to the gym every morning
  3. Read one book a week: It means 7 books.
  4. …and wake up at 5 AM every single day.

First days (Week 1)

I started this crazy challenge on October, so I can let you imagine what it feels like to wake up at 5 AM in a freezing morning.

First days were pretty “hype”. I had that motivation, that fire inside my body that tells me GO DO IT, YOU ARE A BOSS. And that’s what I did…I woke up at 5 AM, did a 15-30 minutes meditation routine (picked up the Tony Robbins priming method), then went to the gym for an hour, then went to work.

Before bed, I start reading a book.

I was feeling extremely pumped & motivated.

Then…Questioning: Why I am doing this? (Week 2-3)

After the hype and motivation rush, I started questioning myself. Why the hell am I doing this? What’s the point? What am I trying to prove anyway?

That’s the moment where I realized that motivation is bullshit, motivation only gets you going, but commitment, strong habits, deep values keep you going.

Remembering these words, I told myself: “Okay, do It for few more days and see…You are not going to die anyway”.

I kept going with it, trying to convince myself that I was implementing a routine, and it’s a process that takes patience and time.

Conviction & Results (Week 3-5)

I started getting the habit. Waking up was not a problem anymore, at some point my body and mind were completely aligned, I could wake up without an alarm. (Which is a huge accomplishment for someone like me trust me).

My routine was on point: Wake up, meditate, train, go to work.

Let me tell you about the main results of it.

Lesson n°1 : Destroy the myth of being “Busy”.

When I wake up at 5 AM, I know that from 5 to 9, this time is mine. I can do whatever I want for me. So, I choose to work on my mind with meditation to heal anxiety, unnecessary stress & to get my ideas clear. I choose to take care of my body with a regular workout. I also choose to read so I can feed my brain with thoughtful information that gives me inspiration and kick start my day.

How many times you feel that your day is running? How many time you feel trapped by your shitty boss who tells you what you should do or should not do?

By doing this challenge, I made decision to start my day by allocating 4 full hours to my exclusive wellbeing.

I went to bed every day at 10pm, which gives me a solid 7 hours of sleep. I work from 9 to 7pm.

From 7pm to 10 pm, I have another 3 hours for my social life, seeing my friends, talking to relatives and families. Joining events or simply enjoying “free time”.

It’s about acknowledging the fact that you have 17 hours a day. It gives you this feeling that YOU HAVE TIME, it forces you to figure out what you can do about it.

Time is the greatest currency, once it’s lost, it’s lost, you can’t get it back.

That was my day to day thinking during this challenge: Squeezing every single Growth opportunity out of the limited hours of my day.

Lesson 2: You already won

Imagine, you wake up at 5 am, you get up, wash your face, go back to your room, put your headphones and listen to a guided meditation, mastering your breathing rhythm and relaxing your entire body and mind. Then dress up, take your gym bag and go smash the weights at the gym, squatting, bench pressing, curling, deadlifting for an hour. Then get back to your place, having a healthy and energizing breakfast…All of this before 9AM.

When you meet your coworkers, and you see them having their coffees “trying to wake up” and here you are: fresh, energized, ready to focus on the “rest of your day”.

Because working to meet your boss goals is not your life priority. Your life priority is you, your growth, your wellbeing, your usefulness, and your resourcefulness. Your mindset shifts from reacting to your day, to mastering your day. That’s one of the best feeling you can have.

After this experience, my advice to you is this: Try new experiences, they are hard, but they change you for the better, they give another perspective, a higher level of “self-awareness”. You start knowing who the hell you are, you identify where are you limits, what you can do and what matters to you.

I stopped this experience after 50 days because I went traveling with friend to the mighty Sweden, and from there, I lost track of my routine. Although I’m convinced that you have an extra time in your life when you do it, you spend more time with yourself and less with others.

I love partying, and it stops when you wake up every day at 5 AM, my social life took a hit, and I believe that you need something that matters you a lot to free time to work on it.

Waking up at 5 AM just for the sake of waking early will not impact your life. But waking up with a clear purpose in your time, knowing what you’re freeing your time for is the key.

I’m still experimenting different experiences, but this one is by far the most impactful.

  1. Omg, this is so inspiring. I’ve been wanting to get up earlier as well and work on fitness, my novel, etc, but I never go to bed early. Plus I have insomnia most nights, so it’s a cycle of Netflix, social media til late hours, then fighting to fall asleep and being drained in the morning. I’m lucky if I get exercise in 2 or three times a week. This has really inspired me to stop making excuses and get back into my fitness and wellness regime. Great post.

    That’s exactly what i am doing these days;after reading your article i feel more motivated to continue i wake up at 5.15 Am do my prayer, meditate and do some fitness workouts then i prepare my breakfast and lunch take a shower i feel fresh full of energy and ready to go to work at 8 am. Making time for ourselves is the best thing we can do . Thank you
